Despite of intelligence and high standard of education Keralites usually face several setbacks in various realms of academic life and in competitive exams in particular. Kerala, the so called God's own country is second to none in India in terms of standard of life and development indices but equals the quality and standard of developed countries like the UK and the US in many respects. We are proud of our state to be achieved cent percent literacy rate and also we have the highly acclaimed Kerala model of health care and family planning. Our people are politically well conscious that they wont allow any political front to rule Kerala for more than five years. In spite of all these verbosities and vainglories in terms of quality education and health care our students miserably fail in successfully competing in All India level exams with their counter parts from other states. Why? This is a question we have been discussing and trying to find out a fruitful solution.Though we've succeeded in our mission to a greater level, permanent solution is still not achieved. First and most importantly our students perform very poor in All India level exams like IAS.We are certain that our children are not inferior in intellect and in lack of opportunities. We have good opportunities. We have excellent career experts. But we miss the crucial and vital part of our academic achievements:communication skill. Our students are often denied opportunities to work in high profile posts thanks to their 'terrible' performance in Group discussions and Personal interviews. While students from North giving too much importance to achieve proficiency in language and to develop their soft skills We 'Mallus' ourselves become a laughing stock before others with our extremely funny pronunciation and low level language.
There is one more problem, which I think is more serious and acute than the above mentioned one .Middle East or the Gulf countries are the backbone of our 'Money order' economy.Hundreds of thousands of Keralites are employed in Gulf countries in various sectors :skilled and unskilled and they are feeding millions of mouths in our households from the time of Gulf boom. Now here is a sad (or glad it's up to you to decide) news that the governments in those countries are busy framing rules to make it mandatory for the foreign workers to have basic qualification either in Arabic or in English making it very difficult for a larger chunk of Indian expatriates their very survival. Majority will have to suffer as they have no knowledge of any other language except their mother tongue.I strongly feel that if Gulf countries start strictly implementing these new criteria Kerala will be in the receiving end and it will have serious repercussions both on our economic and social life. Many of the European countries have already started giving practice to their job aspirants in Gulf countries in Arabic apart from their mother tongue. So it is very late for us to rise from our prolonged slumber of negligence and lethargy.
Because of these two major headaches before us we should take some novel initiatives and bold steps. We should have some long term goals in our mind-equipping our students and work force with the changing needs of this ever-changing world .Otherwise we will be forced to take a back seat in this hyper-competitive world. Our politicians can do a lot in this connection. They are obliged to act according to the need of the people.Instead of indulging in petty publicity stunts and mud slinging each other they should rise to the occasion.Government must initiate steps to solve the aforesaid issues which are likely to become more and more serious in the upcoming years.I humbly feel that Kerala is in dire need for a world class university exclusively for learning and research in prominent world languages like Arabic and English. An institution in the model of the prestigious EFL University, Hyderabad can work wonders in the developmental and job prospects of our state. It will assist our aspiring students to indulge in fierce battles with their rivals and also will be helpful to promote our possibilities and prospects in foreign lands including the Middle East.
